Wood Buffalo National Park

Explore the wild splendor of the northern boreal plains, where whooping cranes call and bison roam free. Visitor reception centres in Fort Smith and Fort Chipewyan. Open year round.

Services

Campgrounds and Cabins

Located 60km from Fort Smith on Pine Lake road, the Pine Lake Campground features peaceful sites with fire pits, tent pads and picnic tables. The area is also equipped with potable water, firewood, sewage dump, outhouses, ans a playground. Hook-ups are not available. The self-registration camping fee is $15.70/ night per campsite. The campground is open from May long weekend through to September long weekend. Two sites are wheelchair accessible.

Located 60km from Fort Smith on Pine Lake road, Kettle Point Group Camp features a log shelter, tenting area, fire circle, firewood, picnic tables, outhouses and playground. The site is wheelchair accessible. Reservations are required, with a minimum group size of eight people. The group camp has a $39.20 non-refundable reservation fee plus a fee of $4.90/person/night.

Hiking

Hiking, backcountry packing, biking, camping, canoeing, kayaking, snowshoeing, skiing, swimming, bird watching, wildlife seeing.

Road Travel

The roads in Wood Buffalo National Park are all-weathered gravel. As distances are long, ensure that you have enough gas for your planned route before leaving. Hazards such as loose gravel, ruts, potholes and dust may be encountered. Some sections of road may become muddy and slippery when wet. Observe posted speed limits and keep a sharp lookout for wildlife such as bison. If you encounter bison on the road, stop and wait for them to move. Do not attempt to push through them with your vehicle. Always drive with your headlights on to alert oncoming traffic. Special precautions are required for safe travel on the winter road.
