Day Hikes: In larger Northwest Territories communities, walking trails are often marked and signed. Our local trails lead to favorite picnic spots, often by a lake, with a spectacular view of the surrounding landscape. For information on trails in and around our communities see Where to Explore, ask at a visitor center or at a community or band office. It's always good idea to let someone know your plans and when you'll be back.
Backpacking: If you long for a challenge, we guarantee you’ll find it if you go backpacking in the Northwest Territories. Plan a wilderness trip in the Mackenzie Mountains, on the Canol Heritage Trail or in one of our National Parks. You must be experienced and well-prepared and you will need some logistical support. Wilderness outfitters offer guided trips on foot or horseback in the Mackenzie Mountains and hiking trips in our National Parks.
Climbing: You'll need logistical support if you plan to climb in the Northwest Territories. The Cirque of the Unclimbables, for example, near Nahanni National Park Reserve is a destination for experienced climbers far from any services. You’ll be dropped off by aircraft at the start of your climb and you'll need a pick up back to your starting point.
Play safe: Rescue services and air ambulances are expensive. Ensure you have the required skills and the right gear. Whether you plan a day hike or a backpacking adventure, our outfitters can assist with getting you there and supply necessary camping and communications gear.
