When you are eating out, try a northern specialty. Fresh whitefish, arctic char, lake trout, pike and pickerel are often on the menu. Muskox, bison and caribou are also northern delicacies.
We welcome visiting pilots. However you need an aircraft with good navigation and communications equipment. Parts of the NWT are designated as "areas of compass unreliability" and lack distinctive landmarks as well. You need appropriate maps to carefully plan your flight.
All communities, except Enterprise, Kakisa and Tsiigehtchic have airports, but services vary considerably. For information on our airports, visit the government transportation website at www.dot.gov.nt.ca. Under the airport section choose Information for Pilots.
Services are limited for private floatplane pilots. You can check for availability with the airport or an airline at your destination, when planning your itinerary. In Yellowknife, fuel and parking are available at the Old Town Float Base (Plummer’s Lodges) located on Back Bay. Tel: 867-873-5330.
