Hay River is a fine base for fishing excursions. There's fishing along the shore of the Hay River for pike and walleye, fishing near Kakisa for pike, walleye and grayling, and fishing on the road to Fort Resolution and near the borders of Wood Buffalo Park. There are several fishing lodges and camps in the area, accessible by chartered float plane.

Great Slave Lake stretches to the northern horizon like a vast inland sea. It’s one of the biggest, deepest freshwater lakes on the planet and the second largest lake within Canada. We call it the Big Lake. Here, on its south shore in Great Slave Gateway, there are sandy beaches stretching for miles.
