Some 1400 pingos (unusual ice-cored hills) dot the coastline near Tuktoyaktuk. The largest is 16 stories high - a real landmark on the flat coastal plain. Besides acting as landmarks and lookout points, pingos have been used as natural freezers in the warm summer months.
Explore the community freezer at Tuktoyaktuk to get an understanding of just how much permafrost there is in this area. Carved from ice several metres below the surface, the freezer clearly shows the layers of sediment and ice that built the land.
Tuk is set on the edge of the Mackenzie Delta on Canada's Arctic coast. Tours are available from Inuvik to see landmarks in the community and visit the pingos, unusual hills formed by frozen water.
