Historically, the Dene travelled up the Yellowknife River from Great Slave Lake and crossed the height of land near Snare Lake to the Coppermine River on the way to the Barrenlands. Sir John Franklin was saved from starvation by the Dene near Snare Lake in 1820. Today, Wekweeti, accessible by air, is the closest community to this historic route.
Wekweeti is a traditional Tlicho community (formerly Snare Lake) 195 air miles north of Yellowknife. There's scheduled air service from the NWT capital, plus a hotel, restaurant and general store. Fish for trout and jackfish, go hiking or cross country skiing at the edge of the treeline. You can book a variety of wilderness trips with local guides, check with the hotel.
