In the Northwest Territories where winter lasts half the year (or more) we’ve found plenty of cool ways to enjoy it.
If you’ve never experienced –40º Celsius, or even -30ºC, that’s another reason to visit the Northwest Territories.
Aurora vacations include day trips (well, night trips, really, with day time activities) at aurora viewing centres. At Yellowknife, for example, a "day trip" might include a choice of accommodation for three nights in a hotel
or cozy bed and breakfast, and tours out of town to see and photograph the northern lights from a base on a remote lake.
Bundled into Arctic-grade parkas, visitors travel into the wilderness by minibus, dogsled, or snowmobile. The packages include guided interpretation, some outdoor activities and a warming mug-up of tea or cocoa in a heated tent or cabin.
In the daylight, visitors can try dog-mushing, ice fishing and snowshoeing. In town there's sightseeing, museum visits and shopping. Aurora tours usually start about 8 or 9 o'clock in the evening, with a bus trip to a remote viewing centre, to prepare for aurora watching in the midnight sky.
