Looking for a good fight, or just a great meal? Anglers can fish for more than nine top species in the Northwest Territories.
Visitors and residents over the age of 16 and under 65 require Northwest Territories fishing licences, available by mail, from government offices or at lodges and convenience stores across the territory.
It's not that difficult to find a secret fishing spot in the Northwest Territories. Our fish are usually eager to take a hook after a long cold winter in the depths of our lakes. And our catch and release programs are designed to ensure stocks remain healthy.
Take to the open waters of our largest lakes. Great Bear Lake and Great Slave Lake are among the top five in North America. Great Slave Lake, North America’s deepest, and about the size of Prince Edward Island, features monster trophy lake trout that lurk in its 614 metre depths. You'll also find massive northern pike in the shallows. Great Bear Lake, about the same area as Vancouver Island, features giant trophy trout, and its streams have produced record grayling catches.
An average sized map can only show a fraction of the great fishing lakes and rivers in the Northwest Territories. Our lodges and outfitters have selected some of the most attractive locations, combining productive fish habitat with spectacular wilderness.
