Drive a Northern Dogteam

DogsledWe love our dog teams. This is the land where the dogsled once ruled the winter snows as the transportation of choice. Today dogsled racing is a spectator sport in the Northwest Territories. For visitors, the thrill is learning to drive your own team. You can harness a team of friendly white huskies and drive your own racing sled in Inuvik.

You can also leave the driving to experienced mushers - go for a ride in a traditional toboggan with a world champion racing team in Yellowknife. Spend an afternoon visiting with the puppies and tour forest trails with an expert musher and his team at a winter resort.

On the Arctic coast, travel the traditional way on an Inuit sledge pulled by a team of dogs. Marvel at the endurance of Eskimo Dogs in the snowy Mackenzie Bison Sanctuary. Follow a trapline, watch the Aurora, and stay in a warm, insulated tent at a wilderness lodge, or a Dene camp. Our northern outfitters will equip you to tackle winter head-on with warm parkas, hats, mitts and boots.

Dogsled races, including one of the toughest mid-distance races anywhere - the 150 mile Canadian Championship Dog Derby - bring the winter season to a close at spring carnivals across the Northwest Territories.
