Moose are the largest members of the deer family, with huge, distinctive antlers. They stand about 1.4 metres (six feet) at the shoulder and can weigh up to 680 kilograms (1,500 pounds). They’re generally solitary animals, and when frightened may fade quickly into the forest. Their most dangerous predators are packs of wolves, which can bring down a full-grown moose by forcing it to run and tiring it. An estimated 20,000 moose live throughout the Northwest Territories, within and beyond the Treeline, in the mountains and along the Arctic coast.
