The muskox, a hardy survivor of the Ice Age, has two layers of fur, an undercoat called qiviut, and a shaggy outer coat that almost reaches the ground. In their most northerly ranges they have no difficulty moving about and locating food in darkest winter. Muskoxen have exceptionally good hearing, eyesight and sense of smell. Although they may appear massive in photographs, these prehistoric relatives of the goat are actually about the size of a caribou.
