Considered marine mammals, polar bears are the largest members of the bear family and can weigh up to 635kg kg (1,400 lb) and measure two to three metres (6.56 ft to 9.84 ft) from nose to tail. They travel long distances near the Arctic shore, on sea ice and by swimming. For protection from hunters they will often resort to piles of jumbled sea ice, where they move with great agility for their size and weight. An estimated 3,000 polar bears inhabit the coasts and islands of the Northwest Territories, out of a world population of 22,000 to 27,000.
