When you are eating out, try a northern specialty. Fresh whitefish, arctic char, lake trout, pike and pickerel are often on the menu. Muskox, bison and caribou are also northern delicacies.
Environment Canada NWT weather provides daily updates on current weather conditions, and weather advisories for Northwest Territories locations.
“Incredible”, “unique”, “exceptional” and “fabulous” are just some of the descriptions our visitors have for the gifts and collectibles produced in the Northwest Territories. You certainly can find t-shirts and key fobs, books and a variety of other souvenirs, but we specialize in one-of-a-kind items, usually made by skilled craftswomen and craftsmen.
Clothing made of traditional materials – wool, hides and fur, trimmed with exquisite beadwork or embroidery, is not only wearable and warm, but unique in an era of mass production. Or choose an exotic scarf hand printed or dyed. Our art – paintings, stonecut prints, and carvings - reflects the worldview of aboriginal artists, and the perspective of other talented northerners. Choose a print from Ulukhaktok, a painting of a northern scene, or a stone carving of a real or mythical creature by an Inuvialuit or Dene sculptor. You can often meet the artist who created the item you select.
Exceptional diamonds are available from our jewelers. Canadian Diamonds come from mines in the Northwest Territories and some are cut and polished here. There are good buys in loose diamonds and diamonds in typical northern settings.
And don’t forget food. You can ship our food anywhere in Canada, though you may need to check regulations in your home country. There are packaged teas, smoked and dried fish and meat, muskox and bison steaks and whole fish. The subtle flavours of our wild foods are truly memorable.
FoodstuffsSample our wonderful wild foods and plan on a northern picnic. Our suppliers can ship anywhere in Canada. | |
