Fort Liard

Fort LiardHighway 7, the Liard Trail, completes the Northwest Territories section of the Deh Cho Travel Connection. Fort Liard (Echaot'je Kue, "people of the land of giants place") is nestled in a pretty valley, at the junction of the Liard and Petitot rivers, a few kilometres from Highway 7. Some buildings are constructed of sturdy logs cut from tall trees nurtured in the valley. Both the Liard and Petitot Rivers are navigable (canoes can be rented in town), and there are several trails to high points in the surrounding mountains. Wood bison and bears are fairly common here.

Fort Liard is famous for birchbark baskets, so beautifully crafted that they're considered works of art. The visitor centre is located in the craft shop, Acho Dene Native Crafts, which markets the trademark baskets. There's a service station, motel and two general stores. Fast food is available on a limited basis in the stores and gas bar, meals may be available at Acho Camps and Catering just outside town - check with the visitor centre. Don't miss the 90-year-old mission building, renovated in 1965. It was built almost single-handedly by Father Vacher, o.m.i., and still serves as a place of worship.
