Fort Providence

Fort ProvidenceFort Providence is a few kilometers north of Highway 1 on Highway 7, across the broad Mackenzie River. Take the free government-run ferry across the river and feel the power of this magnificent water route to the Arctic. For centuries, this was the "highway" to northern villages and trading posts. Tugs and barges still ply the route with goods headed "down north".

Wood bison from the Mackenzie Bison Sanctuary sometimes wander the streets, and graze contentedly on local lawns. The community grew around a mission school and a large farm. Both are long gone, but the name Zhahti Kue, "mission house place" remains, and there's a fine old church. The community has two service centres with motels and restaurants.

There's an excellent craft store in town. Don't miss the fine examples of moosehair tufting, created by craftswomen in this area. A fur garment workshop creates luxurious woven collectibles. Walking trails lead along the river's edge, and local expeditions by boat and air can be arranged, ask at the motel. Slavey and English are spoken here.
