The Great Slave Lake Fishing Fleet

Great Slave Lake stretches 456 kilometres from east to west and feeds the 1700 km long Mackenzie River, which flows north to the Arctic coast. With typical northern understatement, we call Great Slave “the Big Lake”.

Great Slave Lake is the source of superb Canadian fish – lake trout, whitefish, cod, and pickerel from nearby rivers – sold in markets across North America. A small fishing fleet tends nets on the lake and visitors can check the fresh catch through the summer at the fishermen's market in Hay River.
