Line up on the tarmac for a trip into history on Buffalo Airways’ vintage DC-3s. The smooth running birds are part of a fleet of DC-3s still flying scheduled trips between Yellowknife and Hay River. The old girls are featured performers in Ice Pilots NWT, a hit reality television series.
In the series, young pilots fly DC-3s and DC-4s on hair-raising missions to bring food and supplies to distant locations in the inhospitable North.
The DC-3 commuter run is calmer. It’s a bit like wandering through a time warp – friendly passengers and crew, the reassuring hum of hearty motors. Remember when travelling by air was a unique adventure?
The DC-3 makes a single flight each way, weekdays. There are visitor services and interesting tours available in both Hay River and Yellowknife. And for souvenirs there’s Buffalo Air T-shirts and keepsakes to remind you or your trip back in time.
There are direct, scheduled flights to Hay River six days a week from Yellowknife. Car and truck rentals are available.
Hay River Highway 2 connects to NWT Highway 1 the Mackenzie highway at Enterprise and provides road links to southern Canada and to other points in the Northwest Territories, including Fort Smith, Yellowknife and Fort Simpson. Daily Greyhound bus service connects to southern points.
