Mackenzie Heartland Wildlife

<br />
Mountain GoatThe storytellers of Deline and other Sahtu region communities preserve the legends of Yamoria, the hero who chased giant beavers from Great Bear Lake, in the time before history. Although the giant beavers, like the woolly mammoths, are long gone, there is wildlife aplenty in the Mackenzie Heartland area of the Northwest Territories.

Muskox roam north and east of Great Bear Lake. Caribou wander through the woodlands. Moose, black and grizzly bears, mountain goats and Dall’s sheep are found in the Mackenzie Mountains, and visitors who explore the region are almost assured of seeing some of these animals.
