Fort Simpson (Liidlii Kue, "place where the rivers come together") is the Dehcho's gateway to the Nahanni Country. From here, take off for the mountains, by air, or by boat. Day tours are offered by local air charter companies to Virginia Falls and other points in Nahanni Country. Visit a small lodge on a mountain lake for a weekend or a week. Or travel the North Nahanni River by jet boat on a camping trip into the Nahanni Range.
Fort Simpson has a selection of activities for visitors. Try a historic walking tour covering prospector Albert Faille's cabin, the Papal Grounds, and Fort Simpson Heritage Park, a likely location of the first trading post here in 1801. The Village's visitor information centre has displays on the history, culture and geography of the region. The administration office for Nahanni National Park Reserve is in Fort Simpson as well, and provides information, reservation and registration services.
Spend an afternoon at the nine-hole Seven Spruce Golf Course. There's a restaurant at the hotel, and a hotel, motel and B&Bs offer accommodations. Ask about Dene crafts. High quality items are available, from clothing to unique wall decor featuring fine beadwork, moosehair tufting and quillwork.
