Hiking Nahanni Country

Hiking Nahanni CountryThere are many hiking opportunities in Nahanni National Park Reserve, accessible from the river. Hikers can spot a variety of wildlife including moose, Dall's sheep, woodland caribou, black and grizzly bears, wolves, snowshoe hares, falcons, and eagles.

Sunblood Mountain Trail

This is an excursion for overnight visitors to Nahanni National Park Reserve who are also experienced backcountry hikers. From the Virginia Falls campground, cross the South Nahanni River and hike northeast through the forest to steep, open slopes. Climb the scree ridge to your right, then on to the peak of Sunblood Mountain. Trail Length: 8.5 km return, high difficulty.

Glacier Lake Trail

This challenging wilderness trail outside Nahanni National Park Reserve begins on the South Nahanni River and takes you to Glacier Lake, gateway to the Ragged Range and the Cirque of the Unclimbables. It's a hike for those experienced in mountainous backcountry travel. Access is by floatplane to Glacier Lake or from the river. Trail Length: 30 km return, high difficulty.
