The Nahanni Mountains have an aura of mystery. The Slavey Dene live in this area, which has been occupied for some 6000 years. They tell stories of the Naha, a fierce tribe that lived in the mountains and mysteriously disappeared, a very long time ago. Some people now believe the Naha moved south, to become the Navajo, who also speak an Athapaskan language.
There are many stories of the mysterious Nahanni Mountains, of prospectors and trappers, of hotsprings, exotic plants, caves and underground rivers. Each year, as this huge area and its tales are documented, it turns out many of the stories have a basis in truth.
Read up on it - there are two outstanding books about the Nahanni: Dangerous River by R.M. Patterson, and River of Gold by Neil Hartling.
