Canoeing the Western Arctic

CanoeingCanoe or kayak the Peel, the Arctic Red, the Horton or the Thomsen - Arctic rivers with scenery, wildlife and extraordinary wilderness. Our outdoor adventure outfitters will package the trip of your dreams.

The Peel and Arctic Red were the routes to winter camps for the Gwich'in people. Today, the upper reaches of the Peel can be accessed from the Dempster Highway. In summer, the shores of the Arctic Red are home to family camps where fish are caught and dried for winter.

The Horton River rises north of Great Bear Lake and flows to the Beaufort Sea. The Thomsen is one of the most northerly navigable rivers in the Americas, and flows through a wildlife preserve.
