Tsiigehtchic – "Mouth of the Iron River"

The community lies at the confluence of the Mackenzie and Arctic Red Rivers, on an imposing bluff with a commanding view of the waterways. The spectacular setting is highlighted by an 80-year-old church. This is a comfortable day trip by car on the Dempster Highway from Inuvik. Visit the community centre and the small store and ask about local dryfish.

Tsiigehtchic is just off the main highway, which crosses the rivers with ferry service. The ferry ride is certainly worth the trip. Just ask the crew to drop you at Tsiigehtchic and they will watch for your vehicle and pick you up to complete your Dempster drive. A local guide offers river trips on the Arctic Red, a Canadian Heritage River.
