Hiking the Slave Rapids Portage

River TrailsThe trails beside the Slave River are now part of the Trans-Canada Trail, the historic route across Canada that reaches as far as the Arctic Coast. Hikers can follow the shoreline some 30 kilometres, with spectacular views of the four sets of rapids, some beautiful river-washed pink granite and nesting white pelicans. There are several places to hike in Wood Buffalo Park, as well – check with the Park office.

Fort Smith Walking/Ski Trail

A network of paths through the forest and across the 60th parallel to Northern Alberta. You can choose your own route among gentle to steep slopes for walkers, hikers, skiers and runners. Access from the east end of town, off Park Drive or from the old ski chalet just east out of town on Primrose Lane. Trail Length: 6.5 km.

Queen Elizabeth Campground Trail

A network of forested trails nestled between the high banks of the Slave River and the outskirts of Fort Smith. Explore the trails as you head southeast to Riverside Park, overlooking the breathtaking Rapids of the Drowned. Trail Length: 1.8 km.

Riverside Park Network

Beginning on the boardwalk above the banks of the Slave River, the trail ventures into the woods and down a steep slope onto the rocky outcrop bordering the Rapids of the Drowned. Bring your binoculars to observe the white pelicans. Trail Length: 3.9 km.
