Aviation in Yellowknife

Aviation in YellowknifeFlying just comes naturally in Yellowknife. From the city’s earliest days, aircraft supplied news, people and perishables. Although much has changed, the same is still true today. The Old Town docks once were lined with aircraft and the offices of little airlines. Today, Yellowknife has one of the busiest airports in Canada.

There’s still the opportunity to spot rare and unusual aircraft in Yellowknife – there are over 20 different craft based here. The early spirit lives on in the single Otter, Norseman, Piper Cub and a fleet of DC-3s still lovingly maintained by local owners.

To catch the aviation spirit, take a half hour aerial tour from the float base in Old Town, or choose a lake and fly out to fish.

The Midnight Sun Float Plane Fly-In welcomes aviators every two years in Yellowknife. In 2009, it will be held the last weekend of July – watch for details on this site.
